Let’s insist on full disclosure and consent for AI and algorithm use

Calls for a moratorium on artificial intelligence development are unrealistic, says Nitin Pai, co-founder of The Takshashila Institution. Instead, tech billionaires should direct resources into technology policy research to mitigate risks while protecting cognitive autonomy, or human freedom to think, he argues. He suggests giving users clear warnings and the ability to opt out of algorithmic and AI-enhanced digital experiences, and imposing penalties for non-consensual, covert or coercive information delivery. The stakes for human civilisation are so high that the additional compliance costs are worth it, he says.
